The Institute for Laboratory Medicine and Infection Diagnosis is part of the St. Joseph Hospital Bremerhaven and includes the laboratories in the St. Joseph-Stift and St. Joseph Hospital. It is a service facility with an attached laboratory physician practice for all physicians working in hospital and with outpatients.  A wide range of samples (e.g. blood, urine, puncture fluid, with or without additives depending on the purpose of the investigation) are collected here, recorded on computer and assigned to patients and analysed. Our Institute is available 24/7 and offers around 350 different methods for the rapid performance and interpretation of clinically required analyses. All data and results are subjected to continuous monitoring as part of the validation and quality assurance system, which means that all findings leaving the laboratory have been checked for reliability. The Institute performs the various internal quality controls laid down RiliBÄK several times a day. External quality control is ensured by regular participation in ring tests (INSTAND, DGKL, EUCAST).

A total of 20 full-time technical staff, 2 specialist physicians and 1 training assistant currently work at the laboratories
Over 1.5 million blood, liquor, swab, smear, puncture fluid, urine and stool investigations are performed annually. The Institute has proven specialist expertise in infection diagnosis (identification of pathogens) and immunohaematology.
