Clinic for Anaesthesiology and Operative Intensive Care Medicine
The Clinic for Anaesthesiology and Operative Intensive Care Medicine at the St. Joseph-Stift Bremen Hospital provides services in the following areas:
- Anaesthesia
- Operative intensive care medicine
- Pain therapy
- Pain relief in obstetrics
- Emergency treatment for all hospital patients round the clock
In terms of anaesthesiological patient care it has been found that the quality of outcome of surgical interventions, particularly in patients with risk-increasing secondary conditions, is dependent not just on the skills of the surgeon but also to a large extent on the competence of the anaesthetist in preparing for the operation, on the quality of the anaesthetic procedure (including the monitoring of vital organ functions) and on the post-operative care provided.
Our department performs regional and general anaesthesia procedures for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in all specialist clinics throughout the hospital. Approximately 8000 anaesthesia procedures are carried out annually in ten operating theatres. Laughing gas has not been used for general anaesthesia since 2001 for medical and environmental reasons. To optimise the tolerability of anaesthetics for our patients, our standard procedures include continuous brain wave monitoring (neuromonitoring), measurement of muscle relaxation (relaxometry) and use of state-of-the-art, ultra-short-acting anaesthetics (TIVA). An anaesthetist and an anaesthesiology nurse are present during the entire period of patient anaesthesia in all operations.
The Clinic for Anaesthesiology and Operative Intensive Care Medicine has a staff of 19 physicians and 41 specially trained nurses who work in the operating theatres (anaesthesiology nurses) and on the Intensive Care Ward (intensive care nurses).
As a university teaching hospital of Georg-August-Universität Göttingen i the Clinic is involved in the training of medical students during their period of clinical placement.
